Consultation with the persons with dementia and family members is based on a dialogue with the person and their family members to get a better picture of the present situation of the person at home. These sessions help to understand current memory problems and stage of the disease as well as behavioural issues. A caregiving scenario thus emerges. If the person is in early stages following a normal routine in everyday life is possible. Guidance is then provided to maintain independence of the patient both at physical and mental levels and steps to deal with challenging behaviours are discussed. Importance of activities to keep the person engaged is also emphasized in these meetings as activities provide a sense of purpose, engagement, usefulness and accomplishment which reduces behaviours like agitation and wandering. Steps to reduce caregiver stress and burden as well as to maintain caregiver health is emphasized.
